Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic Pregnancy – Ectopic pregnancy is condition in which the embryo gets attached to somewhere outside the uterus. In most of the ectopic pregnancies embryo gets attached to the fallopian tube’s wall and hence ectopic pregnancy is called tubal pregnancy.

In certain other cases the embryo may attach to the ovary or cervix or abdomen. Any of these areas don’t have enough nurturing tissues and space to accommodate the growing baby. Hence most of these organs burst when the embryo grows and leads to severe bleeding that may endanger the life of the mother.

Causes of Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy may affect any women and it happens when the fertilized egg have inability to move towards the uterus. Women having pelvic inflammatory diseases which are caused by sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, chlamydia etc are prone to have ectopic pregnancy.

This is because such diseases develop scars or damages to the fallopian tube which in turn restrict the movement of the fertilized egg towards the uterus and thus leads to ectopic pregnancy.

Women having tubal endometriosis is also prone to get ectopic pregnancy. Abdominal surgeries like appendix removal surgery, caesarian etc also increases the risk of having ectopic pregnancy.

Birth defects of fallopian tube is also a reason. Women having contraceptive coil fitted or taking contraceptive mini pill or had previous ectopic pregnancy are also in risk.

Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy

During the early stage of pregnancy it will be difficult to determine ectopic pregnancy as the symptoms will be same as that of normal pregnancy. There may be missed menstrual bleeding, nausea, breast tenderness, frequent urination, vomiting etc.

In most of the cases ectopic pregnancy can be detected by the pain in abdominal and pelvic region. In extreme cases there may be pain in the shoulders and neck and is due to the internal bleeding that irritates the other organs. Vaginal spotting, lower back pain, low blood pressure etc can also be seen. Sometimes the affected woman collapse and faint.

Any pregnant woman having such symptoms must meet their doctor who may help you to detect the ectopic pregnancy.
